Sneak Peek: CHAOS by Jamie Shaw

11694935_1623984234544050_1356843403989673918_nExcerpt from CHAOS (courtesy of Avon Impulse):

The guys, including Driver, are all gathered in the kitchen, drinking and gaming and watching TV, and I say a quick goodnight to all of them, careful to avoid meeting Shawn’s eyes before I close the curtain and slip into my bunk.

My pillow, my blankets … My entire bed smells like him. After I switched his sheets with mine this morning, I didn’t think to take both sets to the Laundromat with us, and now I’ll be sleeping in his scent. It wraps itself around me when I pull the covers up to my chin and close my eyes. I can almost imagine I’m waiting for him in his bed, that he’ll crawl in next to me at any moment and hold me even tighter than he did inside the club.

My thoughts drift to what would happen after the holding …

And after the kissing …

I toss and turn, turn and toss. I’m alone, lying on my back while staring at the wooden beams above me, thinking of that night six years ago and how it feels like a lifetime ago, when a sliver of light cuts onto the aisle floor.

When Shawn lets the curtain fall shut behind him, that sliver disappears again, leaving nothing but the dim glow of city light sneaking in through gaps in the curtains and blinds. I keep my eyes glued to the bunk above me as he slips out of his jeans, crawls under his covers, and settles in his bed. But when I feel his eyes on me, I roll onto my side to face him.

Across the aisle, he watches me, his scruffy cheek sunken into his pillow and his green eyes the brightest things in the room. He doesn’t look away when I stare back at him, and I couldn’t look away if I tried.

“Stop,” I say, so quietly that I barely reach him across the aisle.

“Stop what?” The softness in his voice tickles over my skin, lighter and warmer than the scented sheet caressing my shoulder. He’s in my head, wrapped around me, staring at me from so, so close.

Stop making me forget.

Stop making me remember.

Stop making me fall for you.

What I want to do is slip out from under the covers, close the space between us, drop to my knees, and press my lips to his. I want to kiss him until his fingers find my sides like they did in the club, like they did in the car, and then I want to put my hands on him the same way. I want to touch him until he’s as lost as I am, until we’re both just gone.

What I actually do is close my fingers around my second pillow and toss it across the aisle. Shawn laughs and catches it, tucking it under his head with no intention of giving it back. I can’t help smiling at him before rolling toward the wall, burying my nose in his pillow, and closing my eyes tight.

I wish Shawn had called me six years ago. I wish he didn’t regret kissing me on the bus.

I wish he didn’t want a girl like me.

I wish he wanted me.

Book Review: Caged (The Mastered Series) by Lorelei James

23281634Synopsis: In order to survive a life of tragedy, Deacon McConnell embraced his roughest edges and learned to fight on the streets. Then a life-changing jujitsu seminar led by Sensei Ronin Black led Deacon to become a professional fighter. With his muscular physique and his body covered in tattoos and scars, the MMA fighter defines mean, both on and off the mat.

But everything changes when innocent Molly Calloway signs up for his kickboxing class. Molly is Deacon’s opposite in every way: She’s kind, sweet, thoughtful, and educated. After a heated argument between them turns into a passionate encounter, Deacon realizes Molly is eager to experience more, and she looks to him to take her to the darker edge of lust….

Review: Wow! CAGED was panty-dropping sexy, and definitely my favorite book thus far in Lorelei James’ MASTERED SERIES!

If you have read the earlier books in the series, you know that the sexual chemistry between Deacon and Molly has burned like a fuse on a stick of dynamite. In CAGED, it finally exploded!

James is a master at creating sexy-hot, alpha male characters, and Deacon is no exception. He is force to be reckoned with, but yet still has a touch of
11206973_10154207335674460_2959111302214935156_nvulnerability that keeps Molly coming back for more.

It was wonderful to see Molly come into her own in this book. She is confident and self-assured in both her professional and personal life. I wanted to cheer her on when she “gave the what for” to her nasty cousins. (Think evil stepsisters in Cinderella/Mean Girls.)

Initially, Molly and Deacon meet when she signs up for a kickboxing class after surviving an assault. By the time we meet Molly in CAGED, she is no longer a victim, or even just a survivor, but an empowered woman capable of defending herself.

Molly’s experience is a great reminder to everyone, especially woman, to learn how to defend themselves. Not only through self-defense or kickboxing classes, but to have an everyday alertness and awareness of your surroundings.

Recommendation: Although there is much more than just sexy times taking place in CAGED, if you are at all uncomfortable with explicit scenes then this is not the book (or maybe even author) for you. If you were hoping for more BDSM, you may be disappointed, too. Molly and Deacon definitely have their own sexual kinks, but it is less BDSM and more voyeurism.

Although I refer to the earlier books in the series, CAGED can be read as a stand alone book. The e-book price has dropped, and is now only $7.49.

Book Review: Wildfire In His Arms by Johanna Lindsey

23492588Synopsis: With his work in Montana completed now that the Callahan-Warren feud has ended in marriage rather than bloodshed, Degan Grant sets out for California because it is far away from the home he wants to forget—until the US Marshal who saved his life calls in a favor. All Degan has to do is apprehend three outlaws on the marshal’s list and turn them over to the law. Easy enough, he figures, for a man no one wants to tangle with.

But then a bold young woman crosses his path. Maxine grew up so pretty and attracted so much unwanted attention in her Texas hometown that events spiraled out of control. She will try anything to escape the handsome, enigmatic gunfighter who intends to turn her over to a corrupt sheriff who will hang her instead of putting her on trial.

Review: I love to listen to books on audio! Typically, I listen to books I have already read, but once in awhile I will listen to a new book, especially if I am a fan of the narrator.

I will admit it, I am a sucker for a swoon-worthy voice!

Tad Branson, the narrator of WILDFIRE IN HIS ARMS, does an excellent job of bringing gunslinger Degan Grant to life. His narration adds a perfect touch of humor, danger, and vulnerability to the character. It was definitely my favorite part about the book.

The story line is classic Johanna Lindsey, a clever heroine struggling to survive verses the handsome gunslinger/lone-wolf honor bound to bring her to justice. Not surprisingly, the strong moral code that both characters live by is what brings them together, and yet keeps them apart.

I have not read many historical, western romances, so it was interesting to learn more about the changes that the first transcontinental railroad was bringing to the west. You definitely had the sense that the west was on the cusp of a new era. I do not remember reading a book where the characters traveled long distances by train, stage coaches, and horses!

Overall, WILDFIRE IN HIS ARMS was  enjoyable, but nothing on par with Lindsey’s earlier books. Plus, the publisher is selling the e-book for $13.99, which I think is much too high. I was able to purchase the audio book for almost the same price!

Recommendation: Unless you are a huge, huge Johanna Lindsey fan, I would borrow WILDFIRE IN HIS ARMS from your local library. Due to Lindsey’s popularity over the years, they will most likely have several copies available. You can always wait for a price drop, too!

If you enjoyed, Johanna Lindsey’s GENTLE ROGUE or Julie Garwood’s THE PRIZE, you will probably like WILDFIRE IN HIS ARMS.

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Hyped Books I Have Never Read

I love “Top Ten” lists! It was one of my favorite segments on the “Late Show with David Letterman.” When I discovered TOP TEN TUESDAY hosted by the Broke and the Bookish, I knew I had to join in on the fun.

Here’s my first official TOP TEN TUESDAY list. It is a few days late, but it was too good to miss.

Top Ten Hyped Books I Have Never Read

1. OUTLANDER by Diana Gabaldon

10964I started OUTLANDER multiple times over the years. I even read past the time travel part, because fellow readers assured me that the story picks up. For whatever reason, it did not keep my interest. I tried, I really did. Maybe someday…

2429135Everyone loved this series! Me, not so much. I started it twice, and then I read the summary on Wikipedia. Sorry, but not really.

10818853First, I have nothing against the FIFTY SHADES OF GREY series. The books got people reading and talking, and that is always a good thing!

Again, I tried. I read almost one-third of the book, but it just did not keep my interest.

100915 Maybe one day…

(Is it weird that I posted FIFTY SHADES OF GREY and THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE back to back?)

5. MY SISTER’S KEEPER by Jodi Picoult

10917I have not read one of Jodi Picoult’s books! I need more HEA, and less reality; even her book descriptions get me down.

11870085 Same as above.

7. EAT PRAY LOVE by Elizabeth Gilbert

19501 I am not a big nonfiction fan.

8. CHARLOTTE’S WEB by E. B. White

24178An animal dies. Enough said.

9. THE LORD OF THE RINGS by J.R.R. Tolkien

I love the movies! I watch them at least once a year. However, the books are another story.

I tried reading them before the movies came out, and I tried again after the first movie was released, but to no avail. J.R.R. Tolkien goes into a lot of detail creating this world, and for me, the story gets lost in it.

10.  THE GIVER by Lois Lowry

This is definitely on my TBR list! I think I have missed quite a few #YA books over the last ten years, so let me know if you have any suggestions.

What do you think of my list? Have I missed out on the best book ever?

Book Review: I Want You To Want Me (A Rock Star Romance) by Erika Kelly

I Want You To Want MeSynopsis: Derek Valencia finally has the success he’s worked so hard for. His band is touring its debut album and great reviews are rolling in. But when pictures of him tossing naked groupies off a balcony go viral, it’s damage-control time. He’s assigned a “babysitter” whose sole job is to keep him out of trouble.

Violet Davis swore she’d never work in the music industry again, but being a minder for a rock star will earn her enough to pay off the mortgage on her wildflower farm. And for a girl brought up in the foster care system, owning her own home means more to her than anything.

Though at first the two bang heads, the rocker and the farm girl soon grow close and realize that they make sweet music together. But can a girl who craves the stability of life on a farm really make it work with a man whose life is spent on the road with his band?

Review: I should start by saying, I absolutely love, love, LOVED the first book in Erika Kelly’s Rock Star Romance seriesYOU REALLY GOT ME. Needless to say, I was eagerly anticipating the release of I WANT YOU TO WANT ME, and I was not disappointed!

Although Kelly is a relatively new published author, her skill at writing is clearly well developed, which is why I find myself so immersed in her books. From the rock star lifestyle and screaming fans, to envisioning the fields of wildflowers and the smell of the ocean air, to literally crying over the heartbreak, I was not just reading Derek and Violet’s rock star romance, I was living it with them.

Things I Loved About I WANT YOU TO WANT ME:

  • The rock star title!
  • The sexual tension and build up was sexy-hot!
  • The lyrics.
  • Imagining Derek’s band, “Blue Fire,” opening for “Imagine Dragons” at Madison Square Garden.
  • The continuation of Emmie and Slater’s story from YOU REALLY GOT ME.
  • The introduction of Francesca, Mimi, and Four O’Clock Farm.
  • Irwin Ledger’s interview.
  • And of course, Derek and Violet’s rock star romance.

As I mentioned, I love, love, LOVED the first book, so I was ecstatic my favorite characters were back in a big way. However, I do think I WANT YOU TO WANT ME loses some of it’s urgency if you have not already read YOU REALLY GOT ME. It definitely lays the ground work and character development that explains the urgency and need to bring in Violet.

Recommendation: Although not necessary, I would definitely recommend starting with YOU REALLY GOT ME and then read I WANT YOU TO WANT ME. Both books are a must-add to any public library. The third book in Erika Kelly’s Rock Star Romance series – TAKE ME HOME TONIGHT should be out in April 2016!

Bonus: Lyrics to Emmie and Slater’s song; Derek (big-brother) approved.

“You Love Me” by Kimya Dawson

I moved around from town to town
Lots of people around, but still so lonely

Friendships would grow then I’d hit the road
Making up excuses for why I had to leave

Always been too scared and unprepared
To let anybody get too close to me

But when I met you right away I knew
You would never ever ever hurt me

And the road’s still long but you come along
And you hold my hand and you understand

When I look at you I can’t believe it’s true
You’re all I ever dreamed of and you love me
And you love me, and you love me
